Abstract
Like Erikson, Fromm, Horney, and Sullivan, Berne trained in psychoanalysis and developed a more socially oriented theory than did Freud. Berne is compared to Freud and Adler on the two main themes (focus on self, stressing social relations) that Ansbacher and Ansbacher (1956) state distinguish the neo-Adlerian tradition. Although Adler's and Berne's approaches are complementary, some contrasts remain.
