Abstract

In excerpts from a roundtable discussion on shame several different viewpoints, theoretical perspectives, and clinical methods are presented and contrasted. Participants argue variously that shame is a result of relationship failure, a natural affect, a survival defense, and a private existential experience. The theory of shame is related to empathy, dialogue, inquiry, attunement, and reciprocity.
