What We Learned in Transactional Analysis and How We Have Changed

Pages 116-121 | Published online: 28 Dec 2017

Abstract

After 15 years in practice using group dynamics, psychoanalytic, and Rogerian methods, in 1965–1966 we learned basic transactional analysis, mostly from Eric Berne, David Kupfer, and Bob and Mary Goulding. We were greatly impressed, and in the 28 years since then, we have used our permissions to continue to learn from others and to experiment with whatever behavioral or psychological methods show promise. Our belief in “I'm OK, You're OK” is expressed less in confronting games and rackets and more in seeing each client as unique, assessing with him or her what is needed at each moment, and making appropriate contracts.
