Abstract

In the present work, multilayer physical vapour deposition (PVD) coating of W/W2N (tungsten/tungsten nitride) were deposited on vanadis 23 steel by unbalance reactive magnetron sputtering in a N2/Ar atmosphere. Microstructures, mechanical and fundamental properties of W/W2N coatings were examined. Pin on disc test was performed on Vanadis 23 steel at room temperature (RT) to elevated temperature (800°C) with the help of bearing steel (100Cr6) and alumina ball to investigate their friction and wear properties. Result shows that friction coefficient of 100Cr6 steel balls are higher than alumina (Al2O3) ball, when sliding against W/W2N coated Vanadis 23 steel. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were performed to obtain the microstructure and chemical composition of the material. Nanoindentation and scratch test was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of thin film.
