Age and Gender Differences

Pages 47-60 | Published online: 23 Oct 2008

Abstract

Comparison of reasons for divorce among older and younger persons indicates an association of reasons to developmental issues, i.e., "grew apart" for older persons and "irresponsibility of spouse" for younger persons. Statistically significant differences between Ule older (M age = 54) group (N = 11 1) are gender related. Traditional male identified issues of infidelity, physical and substance abuse continue into old age. Older persons may accept a lack of intimacy and infidelities for 15 to 44 years, and yet are determined to fulfill their needs. Implications for practice interventions are made.
