ABSTRACT
Metabolic syndrome X is a combination of modifiable (physiological, morphological, lifestyle) and non-modifiable (genotype, sex, age, race) risk factors that are likely precursors to non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), two of the top ten killers of postmenopausal women. This article describes the components of syndrome X, explains why women should be concerned about it, and delineates risk factors. Also discussed are sociological elements related to syndrome X, psychosocial implications of the condition, and suggested treatments. If postmenopausal women can be educated about the dangers of this condition, successful prevention and treatment are more likely.
