Abstract
Calcium channels play an important role in the transduction of the signal from the cell periphery to the cytosol. Entering Ca2+ acts as a the second messenger, triggering muscle contraction, neurotransmitter and hormonal release and controling the activity of many enzymes. Considered here voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC) serve as depolarisation sensors. Many chemicals compounds, such as dihydropyridines, phenylalkylamines, benzothiazepines and some natural toxins that modulate VGCC activity can be applied as precious therapeutic agents and traditionally for treatment of hypertension.
