Abstract
This issue of Western European Education was inspired by a symposium on university autonomy held in March 1978 at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias de la Educación in Madrid. The symposium was opened by the Minister of Education and Science, Iñigo Cavero Lataillade, and attended regularly by the Secretary of State for Universities and Research, Luis Gonzalez Seara. It was conceived as a forum for sharing information and experiences on aspects of university autonomy at a time when Spanish education was expected to be granted considerably more autonomy than it had enjoyed in the recent past, through the provisions of the new higher education act then being drafted.
