Occupational morbidity and burnout: lessons and warnings for HIV/AIDS carers

Abstract

Many occupations can lead to significant morbidity and the identification of the factors involved in its development are of theoretical and practical relevance. The concept of turnout' is discussed, and the occupational and personality factors involved are examined. The evidence about levels of ‘burnout’ in formally trained HIV/AIDS care workers is reviewed, and recommendations made for its prevention and management. Further research directions are outlined.
