Pages 203-215 | Received 03 Mar 1987, Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

The autogenic training (AT) method of relaxation has been taught to 50 HIV-infected individuals, as well as to patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), AIDS-related complex (ARC) and persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL)' as part of a whole package of a holistic way of looking at their lives and well-being. There was a significant and considerable improvement in their quality of life and the development of a positive attitude towards the future within 2 months of the completion of the 7-week course, which was maintained by the majority in the ensuing months, even if they developed further complications. Using the technique the trainees were able to control a number of symptoms such as pain, diarrhoea, night sweats as well as rising temperature. They also seemed to be able to cope with their periods of hospitalization more effectively. Furthermore, there appeared to be an improvement in the prolongation of life, particularly in those suffering from AIDS.
