The Potential of Selenium in the Treatment of Cancer

Pages 145-156 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Current research shows that selenium is effective in the prevention of cancer. This research also shows that selenium slows tumour growth and helps to prevent the spread of metastases. Thus, selenium has a promising role as an adjuvant in the treatment of cancer. Yet no human trials using selenium in the treatment of cancer are being conducted. Over forty years ago Emanuel Revici developed highly nontoxic and effective selenium compounds and used them on patients with reportedly good results. Given the growing evidence of our failure in the war on cancer, the time is long overdue to merge these two lines of research.
