Abstract
This paper introduces a first-year teacher education (primary) subject ‘working mathematically’. This subject demonstrates rich and cohesive learning and teaching episodes by linking practical and theoretical work to build a strong base for pedagogical understanding. Within this subject, pre-service teachers are involved in a range of refl ective and timely assessment activities designed to focus on learning mathematics, to bring collective attention to the work of a teacher, to encourage self-regulatory behaviour and to enhance communication skills. Overall, the paper offers a multifaceted view of how to engage first-year pre-service teachers in the science of teaching primary school mathematics.
