Tree-shaped fractal metamaterial multiband absorber for C- and X-band applications

ABSTRACT

Recently, multiband metamaterial absorbers have gained considerable attention from research and development communities due to their applications in filtering, stealth, and sensing. However, these multiband absorbers are mostly comprised of multilayered metamaterial structures that make them bulky and expensive. In this paper, we investigated a novel multiband absorber made of a single layer of the tree-shaped fractal. The proposed fractal-based metamaterial absorber (FMA) shows the polarization- and angular-sensitive features of the absorption. Furthermore, it is observed that absorptivity is attained due to electric and magnetic resonance. The proposed multiband absorber would be useful for filtering, polarization- and angle-sensing, and shielding. Furthermore, the simulation results are verified by experiments.

Muhammad Basir Abbas

Muhammad Basir Abbas received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology, Multan, Pakistan, in 2018. Currently, he is pursuing his M.Phil degree in Electronics from the Department of Electronics, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan. He is a member of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), Pakistan.

M. A. Baqir

M. A. Baqir received the M.Sc. and M.Phil. degrees in Electronics from the Department of Electronics, Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan, in 2008 and 2011, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia, in 2017. Since 2017, he has been working as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, COMSATS University Islamabad, Pakistan. His current research interests include light-matter interactions, photonic crystals, 2D materials, periodic structures, core-shell nanoparticles, and absorbers. He has earned more than 80 publications in reputed peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings, and a book chapter. He serves as a Reviewer for several journals that include the IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS, Nature Scientific Reports, Optics Express, The Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications, the IEEE PHOTONICS JOURNAL, the IEEE SENSORS JOURNAL, IET Micro and Nano Letters, and IET Power Electronics. He is guest Editor in Materials Research Express.

Olcay Altintaş

Olcay Altıntaş received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Cukurova University in 2020. He is currently working at Iskenderun Technical University as a researcher. He is the author of over 40 scientific papers published in SCI/ SCI Expanded journals. His main research interests include metamaterial-based sensors, absorbers, energy harvesters, and polarization converters in the microwave regime.

Muharrem Karaaslan

Prof. Dr. Muharrem Karaaslan received a Ph.D. degree from the Physics Department, University of Cukurova, Adana, Turkey, in 2009. He has authored more than 200 research articles and conference proceedings. His research interests include applications of metamaterials, analysis and synthesis of antennas, and waveguides.

Musarat Abbas

Dr. Musarat Abbas did his PhD from department of Electronics, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2017. He is an associates Professor at the Department of Electronics, Quaid-i-Azam University,Islamabad. His research interests include Electromagnetics, Metamaterials, Advanced Computer Architecture and Machine Learning.
