Acknowledging inequalities and meeting the unknown other: facilitating encounter

ABSTRACT

In this paper, I define what I understand by encounter and what rewards can arise from such relationships. I emphasize the importance of the stance of humility or not knowing to encounter the mystery of the other. I argue that the precondition for a successful encounter is the shared belief in the equality of all. I then try and elucidate the key aims that I hold for myself as a facilitator of encounter groups, particularly with respect to an attitude of humility, the need for authenticity as an equal participant in the group, and the attention paid to noticing and drawing attention to inequalities. I attempt to describe the conflicts that these aims bring forth and how I deal with these dilemmas. I discuss my joys and struggles in this role. I finally conclude with the transformative potential that can arise for all from facing these challenges and being open to encounter.
