ABSTRACT
Magnesium and magnesium-based alloys and composites have remarkable applications in automobile, aerospace, marine, electronic sectors and in all weight reduction applications. Pure magnesium and its alloys properties were influenced by the addition of reinforcements in particles and whiskers structure. This review paper delivers the outcome of recent researches on the effect of reinforcements such as silicon carbide, carbon nano tubes, graphene nano platelets, alumina and rare earth in magnesium-based materials. Maximum improvement in Young’s modulus 89 GPa, ultimate tensile strength 435 MPa for AZ91D – 30SiC (vol. %), yield strength (0.2%) 296 MPa for (AZ91D – 0.5GNS (wt.%)), ultimate compressive strength 510MPa (AZ91D – 10Ti2AlC (wt.%), hardness 88.5HV for AZ91 – 0.5GNS (wt.%) were reported by previous works.
