ABSTRACT

Phlorotannins are a kind of polyphenolics extracted from brown seaweed, which have a series of biological activities. It is worth mentioning that the antioxidant activity of phlorotannins has been widely used in the fields of medicines, cosmetics and food. And there are various chemical and biological methods for evaluating the antioxidant activity of phlorotannins. Due to the lack of accuracy and authenticity of chemiluminescence, cell models gradually become the mainstream method based on more realistic biological environment. Based on the above reasons, this paper summarized the research progress of phlorotannins in cell models, potential mechanism of antioxidant activity and factors affecting antioxidant activity of phlorotannins in recent years. The aim is to provide valuable experience for the future development of marine resources, the research and application of antioxidant phlorotannins and the treatment of human oxidative stress diseases.
