Mini-review: Recent Advances in Electrochemical Determination of Sulfonamides

ABSTRACT

Sulfonamides are antimicrobial drugs which are widely used in human and veterinary medicine but pose a potential risk as emerging pollutants when present even at low concentrations in soil or water. Therefore, the development of analytical tools for sulfonamide monitoring is needed. Electrochemical methods have been commonly reported for sulfonamide detection. Here are reported recent developments related to the use of electrochemical detection of sulfonamides from 2006 to 2016. A discussion of sulfonamide detection is provided for pharmaceutical formulations, biologic fluids, food, and environmental samples. In addition to the developed electrochemical methods, a brief review of sulfonamide sample preparation is also included.
