Why medical students need addictions training

Abstract

Current medical students will be tasked at attempting to resolve the opioid epidemic in the United States that has been created by generations before them. This article will address one educator’s view on the current state of training addiction treatment skills to medical students.

Rebecca E. Cantone

Rebecca E. Cantone, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Scappoose Rural Family Medicine Clinic of Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). She also serves as the Director of the Medication Assisted Treatment Program at that clinic and as the Director of the Family Medicine Core Clinical Experience (Clerkship) at the OHSU School of Medicine. She is also the lead of the Rural College in the School of Medicine and a Focused Faculty Member at the OHSU FM Residency.
