Abstract

It is difficult to request that all professionals implementing a construction project have intrinsic responsibility for the whole project from planning to construction and maintenance due to the dynamic environment and the intracompany transitions. In an attempt to understand the phenomenon of commitment in the construction industry, this study seeks to identify the factors that bring about goal commitment among construction professionals. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Hong Kong. Analytical techniques including factor analysis, correlation coefficient and regression analysis, and structural equation modelling were applied to investigate the relationships among the factors and three forms of commitment. The results indicate that goal assignment and acceptance, specific goal achievement and membership maintenance in an organization are the major antecedents of (affective and normative) commitment for construction professionals.
