3. The asterisk on the end of the word ‘trans’ serves as a placeholder for any words which might follow it (e.g., *masculine or *gender). It may also be used to speak about identities that do not start with the prefix ‘trans’ but are spoken about within a trans* ‘umbrella’ (such as genderqueer or non-binary).
