Abstract
Giovanni Arrighi, Takeshi Hamashita, and Mark Selden's volume The Resurgence of East Asia is a historical, social scientific study of the current flourishing of the East Asian economy. They use Fernand Braudel's model of capitalist cycles to elucidate East Asia's recent economic history as it pertains to current economic conditions. The authors emphasize the need to reconceive our understanding of global economies to include the regionalizing of the areas of the world—not to undermine the reality of nation-states, but rather, to capture very real economic conditions that both exceed and defy the limits of borders. The volume asks solid questions that reveal fresh and illuminating answers. Because of its lucidity and accessibility, the volume is of scholarly interest to anyone involved in cultural studies and Marxist theory, as well as scholars working in the field of economics.
