Box 1 Learning Objectives and Responsibilities of Chief Resident for Research

Learning Objectives At the end of the experience, the chief resident will:  ● Be able to support and mentor junior residents in the program.  ● Possess expanded skills of teaching and leadership and capacity to develop those emerging skills in other residents.  ● Understand one’s own level of development of professional identity and facilitate expansion of residents’ developing professional identities.  ● Be able to effectively communicate and negotiate concerns between residents, residency training leadership, and site-specific leadership.  ● Be able to develop and implement plans to address problem areas identified in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.  ● Be able to effectively assess and communicate residents’ perspectives on emerging policies.  ● Understand how to work within the complex systems in academic psychiatry in a large, multi-site training program.  ● Be able to advocate for improvement of training and clinical care at each level of the system.  ● Learn to organize and run a scientific meeting.  ● Acquire leadership in science skills to effectively act as a research manager and mentor. Roles The Chief Resident for Research will:  ● Lead activities to foster community and belonging amongst research track residents.  ● Support diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic psychiatry through events and recruitment.  ● Serve as a liaison between research track residents and faculty, administration, and program leadership.  ● Improve the visibility of and opportunities for research and scholarly projects for residents.  ● Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to inquiry and scholarship in the residency curriculum.  ● Participate in a legacy project to advance the research track community.  ● Aid in recruitment of new residents to the program.
