Hypnosis in the Treatment of Phobias: A Review of the Literature

Pages 261-272 | Published online: 22 Sep 2011

Abstract

The literature on the use of hypnosis in the treatment of phobias was reviewed. Case reports and controlled studies indicated mixed results, which were discussed in terms of methodological considerations, the overlap between hypnotherapy and behavior therapy, and hypnotic susceptibility and phobic behavior. It was concluded that hypnosis is an effective and efficient adjunct in the treatment of phobias.
