Identifying Mechanisms of Teaching Practices: A Study in Swedish Comprehensive Schooling

Pages 213-228 | Received 22 Aug 2014, Accepted 01 Jun 2016, Published online: 13 Sep 2016

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to identify the mechanisms behind the occurrence of teaching practices of seatwork and recitation across lessons. The study is based on an analysis of 74 video recorded lessons from 4 school classes in Swedish comprehensive schools during 2013. Firstly, the results suggest that teaching practices such as seatwork dominated across lessons when compared to, for example, reciting. Secondly, the study gives a detailed analysis of teaching practices by analyzing video transcripts. Thirdly, using Cox regression the study lends a weak support for the school subject’s impact on seatwork and recitation. A weak support was found for recitation and no support was found for seatwork. However, no statistical generalization was possible and further research is needed.

Notes

1 The authors suggest the change in values is due to neo-liberalism’s increasing influence on education.

2 Free schools are publicly funded but have greater autonomy than schools governed by the municipality. Furthermore, free schools can have a variety of different owners such as corporations or a foundation.

3 Although teachers and students do initially notice the camcorders, the participants get used to them during the lesson. Thus, it seems as if it takes too much effort for the participants to concentrate on both the lesson and the camcorders.

4 Reasons are hidden and cannot be observed. Questions lead teachers to improvise “post hoc reasons” (Boltanski & Thévenot, Citation1999). Instead you have to reconstruct reasoning using pieces of information as in a crime novel (Boudon, Citation1993).

5 Given the small number of cases and the design of the study, it was not possible to estimate the effect of differences in stable characteristics of a class such as ethnic composition. It was only possible to control for them.
