Duodenal Bile Acids after a Test Meal

Duodenal bile acids after test meal stimulation of gallbladder emptying were studied in 12 healthy volunteers, using a purified 3a-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase for the quantitative determination. An average total bile acid concentration of 14.5 µmole per ml (range 5.8–39.6) was found. All bile acids occurred conjugated, the mean G/T-ratio being 3.2 ± 1.7 (S.D.). The bile acids were conjugated in the same proportions with glycine and taurine. Expressing the relative proportions of the three major bile acids as percentages of the total, the average value for cholic acid was 40 per cent (range 25–50), chenodeoxycholic 40 per cent (range 30–52), and deoxycholic 20 per cent (range 10–35).
