Quantifying Nature

Integrated science and mathematics instruction through nature journaling and five core routines

Pages 64-68 | Received 01 Jun 2023, Accepted 27 Jul 2023, Published online: 28 May 2024

Abstract

Children’s thinking is naturally interdisciplinary, yet science and mathematics instruction continue to be siloed in the classroom. In this lesson, we combine nature journaling with the Five Core Routines for Learning Mathematics Outside to provide first-grade students with a fully integrated lesson that focused on science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and standard of mathematical practice equally. This integrated learning experience provided students with opportunities to be both scientists and mathematicians as they pursued their curiosities and reasoned about the natural world.
