Interference in Learning Context‐dependent Words

Abstract

A number of studies have indicated that extra contexts, such as pictures and sentences, can block and interfere with the learning of single context‐free words such as common nouns when the new words are presented with pictures and/or sentences simultaneously. A different result might be expected, however, when the new words are context‐dependent. Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of extra contexts on learning context‐dependent words. The results were no different from those obtained with context‐free words and showed that the extra contexts inhibited learning these context‐dependent words in the simultaneous presentations. The application of feedback techniques neutralised the blocking effect.
