Abstract
Hierarchical CeO2 sub-micro spheres fabricated with nanoflakes have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method without organic agents. The influence factors of the type of precipitant, amount of H2O2, as well as reaction times and temperatures have been thoroughly investigated. The as-prepared hierarchical CeO2 sub-micro spheres are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scan electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CeO2 sub-micro spheres are composed of the aggregated CeO2 nanoflakes. The conceivable formation mechanism of hierarchical CeO2 nanospheres is proposed involving a self-assembly-oriented aggregation induced by urea and Ostwald ripening. The hierarchical CeO2 sub-micro spheres exhibit improved activity for the conversion of CO to CO2 in comparison with CeO2 nanoparticles.
