Abstract

In the responses to the original article, the necessity of adopting an embodied approach in the study of the mind instead of the traditional symbolic approach in classical cognitive psychology is assumed. However, as soon as the nature of that embodied mind and its relationship to explicit representations mediated by semiotic cultural devices is delved into, that consensus gives way to significant criticism and discrepancies. Without wishing to end the debate, but rather open or ignite it, this article seeks to respond to some these observations, grouping them into four sections: (1) the acceptance of the body as a representational device; (2) the risk of incurring a new dualism when differentiating an embodied and implicit mind from a symbolic and explicit one; (3) the transformation processes of mental representations and functions in development as well as in instruction; and (4) the implications of these reflections on the relationships among mind, brain and culture.

Resumen

En las réplicas al trabajo original se asume la necesidad de adoptar un enfoque encarnado en el estudio de la mente frente al tradicional enfoque simbólico en la Psicología cognitiva clásica. Sin embargo, en cuanto se profundiza en la naturaleza de esa mente encarnada y su relación con las representaciones explícitas mediadas por dispositivos culturales semióticos, ese consenso da paso a importantes críticas y discrepancias. Sin pretender cerrar el debate, sino más bien abrirlo o encenderlo, este texto intenta responder a algunas de esas observaciones, agrupándolas en cuatro apartados: (1) la aceptación del cuerpo como un dispositivo representacional; (2) el riesgo de incurrir en un nuevo dualismo al diferenciar una mente encarnada e implícita de otra simbólica y explicita; (3) los procesos de trasformación de las representaciones y funciones mentales tanto en el desarrollo como en la instrucción; y (4) las implicaciones de estas reflexiones sobre las relaciones entre mente, cerebro y cultura.
