The (re)activation of idiomatic expressions (La (re)activación de expresiones idiomáticas)

ABSTRACT

Two experiments examined meaning (re)activation of English idiomatic expressions by Spanish-dominant, English-dominant and balanced bilinguals. Participants listened to idiomatic expressions of the type I always _3*miss the boat_1* when it comes to jokes, and that_2* makes it nearly_4* impossible to attend comedy shows, and made lexical decisions to visually presented targets that were related literally (water), figuratively (fail) or unrelated to the critical idiomatic expression. In Experiment 1, we measured meaning activation immediately at idiom offset (probe 1*) and after an anaphoric referential description (e.g., that; probe 2*). Probe 2 was intended to further examine whether an anaphoric referential description was more likely to (re)activate its antecedent figurative interpretation that could be more pragmatically plausible than its literal representation. In Experiment 2, targets were presented at idiom onset and 300 ms after anaphor offset. Results revealed that idiom meaning (re)activation was modulated by language dominance, where English-dominant and balanced bilinguals had faster and more accurate responses than Spanish-dominant bilinguals.

RESUMEN

Dos experimentos examinaron la (re)activación de significados de expresiones idiomáticas inglesas realizada por sujetos bilingües con dominio del español, con dominio del inglés y equilibrados. Los participantes escucharon expresiones idiomáticas del tipo, Yo siempre _3*pierdo el barco_1* cuando se trata de bromas, y eso_2* hace que me resulte prácticamente imposible_4* asistir a espectáculos cómicos (I always _3*miss the boat_1* when it comes to jokes, and that_2* makes it nearly_4* impossible to attend comedy shows), y tomaron decisiones léxicas para objetivos presentados visualmente que fueron relacionados literalmente (agua), figurativamente (fracasar) o no relacionados con la expresión idiomática esencial. En el Experimento 1, medimos la activación de significados inmediatamente en el momento de compensación del mo-dismo (Prueba 1*) y después de una descripción referencial anafórica (por ejemplo, eso; Prueba 2*). El objetivo de la Prueba 2 fue volver a examinar si la descripción referencial anafórica tenía más probabilidades de (re)activar su interpretación figurativa precedente que podría ser más verosímil pragmáticamente que su representación literal. En el Experimento 2, los objetivos se presentaron al comienzo del modismo y 300 ms después de la compensación anafórica. Los resultados revelaron que el dominio del idioma moduló esa (re)activación del significado del modismo, y que los bilingües con dominio del inglés y bilingües equilibrados ofrecieron respuestas más rápidas y precisas que los bilingües con dominio del español.
