Navigating the job market with gender research

ABSTRACT

The marketing job market can cause feelings of uncertainty and fear among young scholars who are studying gender and sexuality dynamics in the marketplace. In this commentary, I provide recommendations for successfully making it through the job market. In particular, I give guidance on maintaining confidence when navigating the job market, positioning your contributions within the field of marketing, and identifying the culture of the schools to which you are applying. I use my own experience successfully preparing for and navigating the 2019 job market.

Abigail Nappier Cherup

Abigail Nappier Cherup is an assistant professor of Marketing at California State University San Marcos. She holds a PhD in Marketing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an MA in Gender & Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research investigates marketplace inclusion from both consumer and service provider perspectives. Specifically, she investigates how managers and service providers construct and maintain inclusive market spaces, and how consumers with invisible stigmatized identities identify and experience inclusive market spaces.
