Abstract
Using a range of qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques, this small-scale research study investigated whether encouraging the use of more exploratory talk in mathematics lessons could help improve understanding of mathematical concepts for a mixed ability Year 4 class. It was found that although most children derived some benefit, those of middle ability levels developed their understanding the most.
