Social factors and height gain of primary schoolchildren in England and Scotland

Summary

Associations between height and certain social factors are known to persist throughout the primary school years. To discover whether the height differences between social groups are increasing or diminishing during this time, heights of 7569 English and Scottish 5 to 10 year olds measured in 1972 and 1973 were examined, together with information about number of siblings, father's social class and father's employment status. With the exception of five year old children of unemployed fathers, any increases in height differentials were no more than would be expected from the dependence of height gain on initial height. No evidence was found of absolute decrease in height differences over one year, for any of the three social factors considered, but children from larger sibships grew more than expected given their starting heights. Thus associations between attained height and social factors in five to ten year old children arise almost entirely before the age of five and do not alter appreciably during the primary school years.

Zusammenfassung

Verknüpfungen zwischen der Körperhöhe und bestimmten Sozialfaktoren bestehen bekanntermaßen während der Grundschuljahre. Zur Prüfung, ob die Körperhöhenunterschiede zwischen den Sozialgruppen während dieser Zeit zunehmen oder abnehmen, wurden die Körperhöhen von 7569 englischen und schottischen Kindern im Alter von 5–10 Jahren in den Jahren 1972 und 1973 geprüft, zusammen mit Angaben über die Zahl der Geschwister, die Sozialklasse des Vaters und den Beschäftigungsstatus des Vaters. Mit der Ausnahme von 5 Jahre alten Kindern arbeitsloser Väter waren die Zunahmen der Körperhöhenunterschiede nicht größer als bei Unabhängigkeit des Körperhöhenzuwachses von Anfangskörperhöhe zu erwarten. Es fanden sich keine Hinweise für eine absolute Abnahme der Körperhöhenunterschiede über ein Jahr, für jede der drei einbezogenen Sozialfaktoren, aber Kinder aus größeren Geschwisterreihen wuchsen stärker als bei der gegebenen Anfangshöhe erwartet. Somit entstehen die Korrelationen zwischen erreichter Körperhöhe und Sozialfaktoren bei Kindern im Alter von 5–10 Jahren fast gänzlich vor dem Alter von 5 Jahren und ändern sich nicht wesentlich während der Grundschuljahre.

On sait que des associations entre la taille et certains facteurs sociaux persistent au long des années d'école primaire. Pour découvrir si la différence de taille entre groupes sociaux augmente ou diminue durant cette période, les tailles de 7 569 Anglais et Ecossais âgés de 5 à 10 ans mesurés en 1972 et 1973 ont été examinées conjointement à de l'information sur le nombre de germains, la classe sociale du père et le statut professionnel du père. A l'exception des enfants de cinq ans de père sans emploi, aucan des accroissement de différence de taille n'était supérieur à ce qu'on attendrait d'une dépendance du gain de taille de la taille initiale. Il n'a été trouvé de signe d'une diminution absolue des différences de taille sur un an pour aucun des trois facteurs sociaux considérés, mais les enfants de fratries plus grandes ont grandi plus qu'attendu de leur taille initiale. Les associations entre la taille atteinte et les facteurs sociaux chez les enfants de cinq à dix ans se créent presque entièrement avant l'âge de cinq ans et ne se modifient pas de façon appréciable durant les années d'école primaire.
