Age variation in the upper limit of hearing and amplitude of eye accommodation in childhood and adolescence

Summary

The upper limit of hearing and amplitude of eye accommodation were examined, and their standard ageing curves were established in order to evaluate their age-related changes in childhood and adolescence. The subjects were 2497 audiometrically and otologically normal ears and 2349 optometrically and ophthalmologically normal eyes ranging in age from 5 to 24 years in Japan. The upper limit of hearing was measured by the equipment made by us. The amplitude of eye accommodation was calculated at near point and far point measured by the ophthalmodynamometer. Both the upper limit of hearing and amplitude of eye accommodation became gradually less as age increased. The variability of the upper limit of hearing was less than that of the amplitude of eye accommodation. Standard ageing curves were established in childhood and adolescence by calculating 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th centiles. There is no significant relationship between the upper limit of hearing and the amplitude of eye accommodation.

Die obere Grenze des Hörens und die Amplitude der Augenakkomodation werden untersucht, und ihre Standard-alterskurven werden entwickelt, um ihre altersgebundenen Veränderungen in Kindheit und Jugend einzuschätzen. Die Probanden waren 2497 audiometrisch und otologisch normale Ohren und 2349 optometrisch und ophthalmologisch normale Augen in der Altersspanne von 5–24 Jahren in Japan. Die Obergrenze des Hörens wurde durch von uns entwickelte Geräte gemessen. Die Amplitude der Augenakkomodation wurde beim Nahpunkt lund beim Fernpunkt durch den Ophthalmodynamometer gemessen. Sowohl die obere Grenze des Hörens als auch die Amplitude der Augenakkomodation nahmen mit zunehmendem Alter allmählich ab. Die Variabilität der Obergrenze des Hörens war geringer als diejenige der Amplitude der Augenakkomodation; Standardkurven wurden für Kindheit und Jugend durch Berechnung der 10., 25., 50., 75. und 90. Perzentile berechnet. Es gibt keine signifikante Verknüpfung zwischen der Obergrenze des Hörens und der Amplitude der Augenakkomodation.

La limite supérieure de l'audition et l'amplitude d'accommodation de l'oeil ont été examinées et leurs courbes standart de vieillissement établies, afin d'évaluer leurs changements liés à l'ăge pendant l'enfance et l'adolescence. Les 2497 sujets examinés, japonais de 5 à 24 ans, présentaient des réponses normales des oreilles pour les examens audiométriques et otologiques, ainsi que des yeux pour les examens optométriques et ophtalmologiques. La limite supérieure de l'audition a été déterminée à l'aide d'un instrument de notre fabrication. L'amplitude d'accommodation de l'oeil a été calculée aux points le plus proche et le plus éloigné, mesurés par un ophtalmodynamomètre. La limite supérieure de l'audition et l'amplitude d'accommodation de l'oeil deviennent l'une et l'autre plus brèves, lorsque l'ăge s'accroit. La variabilité de la limite supérieure de l'audition, est inférieure à celle de l'amplitude d'accommodation de l'oeil. Des courbes standart ont été établies pour lenfance et l'adolescence, en calculant les 10ème, 25ème et 90ème centiles. Il n'y a pas d'association significative entre la limite supérieure de l'audition et l'amplitude d'accommodation de l'oeil.
