Comparisons of Laker's coefficient of relationship in a Venezuelan town in two different periods

Summary

A formula for the standard error of Lasker's coefficient of relationship R_i derived from isonymy is proposed, and used to test for differences in relationship in two groups of pairs of spouses from the town of Quibor in Venezuela sampled one century apart. From analysis of the relationship, it was possible to attribute population growth also to immigration. Further, the study of the values of R_i showed that the surnames belonging to the male line are more frequent and stable in this population, which is characterized by a predominantly agricultural activity. From the analysis of the coefficients of relationship, the population of Quibor is also classified as patrilocal.

Zusammenfassung

Für den Standardfehler von Laskers Verwandtschaftskoeffizient R_i aus Isonymie wird eine formel vorgeschlagen und angewendet, um Unterschiede der Verwandtschaft bei zwei Gruppen von Partnerpaaren der Stadt Quibor in Venezuela zu testen, die im Abstand von einem Jahrhundert gesammelt wurden. Aus der Verwandtschaftsanalyse konnte das Bevölkerungswachstum auch auf Einwanderung zurückgeführt werden. Weiterhin zeigten die Werte von R_i, daß die Nachnamen, die zu einer männlichen Linie gehörten, häufiger und stabiler in dieser Bevölkerung sind, was durch eine hauptsächlich bäurische Aktivität gekennzeichnet ist. Aus der Analyse der Verwandtschaftskoeffizienten wird die Bevölkerung von Quibor auch als patriloka klassifiziert.

Résumé

Une formule est proposée pour le calcul de l'erreur standart du “coefficient d'association” R_i de Lasker, obtenu par isonymie, et utilisée afin d'éprouver les différences d'association dans deux groupes de couples échantillonnés `a intervalle d'un si`ecle, dans la ville de Quibor au Venezuela. A partir de l'analyse d'association, il a été possible d'attribuer également l'accroissement de population `a l'immigration. Qui plus est, l'étude des valeurs de R<sub>i</sub> a montré que les noms de famille appartenant `a la lignée masculine, sont plus fréquents et plus stables dans cette population qui est caractérisée par une activité `a prédominance agricole. L'analyse des coefficients d'association permet également de déterminer le caract`ere patrilocal de la population de Quibor.
