Age at menarche of European, Afro-Caribbean and Indo-Pakistani schoolgirls living in London

Summary

Age at menarche is reported for 1,365 European, 530 Afro-Caribbean and 282 Indo-Pakistani schoolgirls taking part in a cross-sectional anthropometric survey in the London Area Health Authorities of Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster, and Brent and Harrow, in 1980–81. Mean ages at menarche are 13·59±0·37 years (European), 13·18±0·11 years (Afro-Caribbean) and 13·06±0·20 years (Indo-Pakistani). The European value is significantly higher than those for Afro-Caribbean and Indo-Pakistani girls, and for Europeans living in the same areas of London in 1966. Social class has an effect on age at menarche in Afro-Caribbean and European girls, but not Indo-Pakistani girls, whilst family size has an effect on age at menarche in Europeans and Indo-Pakistanis.

Das Menarchealter von 1365 europäischen, 530 afro-karibischen und 282 indopakistanischen Schulmädchen, die 1980–81 an einer anthropometrischen Querschnittsstudie der London Area Health Authorities von Kensington, Chelsea und Westminster sowie Brent und Harrow teilgenommen haben, werden mitgeteilt. Die mittleren Menarchealter sind 13,59±0,37 Jahre (europäische Mädchen), 13,18±0,11 Jahre (afro-karibische Mädchen) und 13,06±0,20 Jahre (indo-pakistanische Mädchen). Der Wert für Europäerinnen ist signifikant höher als die Werte für afro-karibische und indopakistanische Mädchen, aber auch höher als der entsprechende Wert für europäische Mädchen, die 1966 in denselben Stadtteilen Londons gelebt haben. Bei afro-karibischen und europäischen Mädchen hat die soziale Schicht einen Einfluß auf das Menarchealter, nicht dagegen bei indo-pakistanischen, während die Familiengroße bei europäischen und indo-pakistanischen Mädchen einen Einfluß auf das Menarchealter ausübt.

L'âge des premières règles est enregistré 1365 écolières européennes, 530 afro-antillaises et 282 indo-pakistanaises, ayant pris part en 1980–81, à une étude anthropométrique transversale dans les juridictions sanitaires de Kensington, Chelsea et Westminster à Londres, ainsi qu'à Brent et Harrow. Les âges moyens des premières règles sont 13,59±0,37 ans (européennes), 13,18±0,11 ans (afro-antillaises) et 13,06±0,20 ans (indo-pakistanaises). Les valeurs européennes sont significantivement plus élevées que celles des filles afro-antillaises et indo-pakistanaises, ainsi que par rapport à celles d'européennes habitant les mêmes quartiers de Londres en 1966. L'âge des premières règles des filles afro-antillaises et européennes est affecté par la classe sociale, mais non pas celui des filles indo-pakistanaises. La taille de la famille a un effet sur l'âge des premières règles des filles européennes et indo-pakistanaises.
