Preface

After its inception in the year 1998, the international association of High Pressure Bioscience and Biotechnology (HPBB) has been organizing this conference as a biennial meeting to have fruitful discussions on most recent and exciting research in the area of high pressure bioscience and biotechnology. The past conferences were held in Kyoto (Japan, 2000), Dortmund (Germany, 2002), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2004), Tsukuba (Japan, 2006), San Diego (United States, 2008), Freising (Germany, 2010), Otsu (Japan, 2012), Nantes (France, 2014), and Toronto (Canada 2016). The 10th anniversary conference HPBB2018 was held in Numazu, Shizuoka, Japan, from September 18th to 22nd, 2018. The conference venue was ‘Plaza Verde’, the largest convention complex in Shizuoka Prefecture. Like all previous meetings, this conference also offered opportunities for participants to present their recent work and indulge in discussions with not only the experts who had been involved with the field of high-pressure research but also those who intended to introduce high pressure into their research and development.

The number of participants in the HPBB2018 was approximately 120 from 10 countries. There were 10 keynote lectures, 32 oral presentations, and 45 poster presentations during the conference. The sessions involved high pressure effects on biological macromolecules and organisms, high pressure medical sciences, and high pressure food processing. Three students were awarded a prize for their excellent poster presentation. The conference was very exciting, and there were some remarkable advances in the field of high pressure research. Many questions appear to have been answered and many more put forth for us to solve in years to come. Discussions during or after the sessions were able to ignite some minds with novel ideas and better research problems.

Twenty-three contributed papers from the conference have been peer reviewed for publication in the HPBB2018 special issue of High Pressure Research. We would like to acknowledge all the contributors and reviewers for their efforts to publish this issue as well as the participants, members of the scientific advisory board and local committee for their contribution to the success of the HPBB2018.
