This special issue is a spin-off of the research seminar “Conceptualising the Learning Region: Economic-Geographical Aspects,” held in April 2009 at Radboud University Nijmegen. As part of the RSA Research Network “Theorising Regional Development: The theoretical background of new concepts in regional studies,” the aim of this seminar was to further the conceptual development of the Learning Region, in particular of its economic-geographical aspects. The session also built on a series of events on Learning Regions organized by Frans Boekema and Roel Rutten in the past. We thank all contributors for their valuable inputs and comments.
