Abstract
This appreciation was written immediately after Brian McLoughlin's death and published originally in Town Planning Review, 1994, Vol 65 (4), pp. 341–347. It aims to set his corpus of work and his career in the context of developments in planning education and research, in Britain, and later in Australia, from the 1950s to the 1970s. Given the speed with which it was written, there are inevitably some errors of Brian's personal history.
