Abstract
This essay examines the need for giving criticism a more substantial role in communication theory and research. It further examines the structures through which such an expanded role can be most effectively developed. Finally, the essay outlines the principles and practices that can contribute to the cultivation of a critical attitude of the type necessary for criticism to play not only an expanded role but a consequential one.
