Developing a Value Management Capability: A Literature Study and Exploratory Case Study

Abstract

The present research identifies and defines value management practices that can help to accommodate and organize IS investments in order to secure and maximize their value-creating potential. Drawing on the resource-based view, we developed a conceptual model organizing 25 unique practices as part of three distinct competences (structural, process, and relational) that are integrated and mobilized through an overarching Value Management Capability. Findings are based on a literature review and exploratory case study.

Kim Maes

Kim Maes is currently a PhD candidate in the department of Information Systems Management at the University of Antwerp, and IWT Fellow of the Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology. He is also affiliated with the IT Alignment & Governance (ITAG) Research Institute of Antwerp Management School and focuses on IT enabled Innovation, Business Cases, IT Business Value, and IT Governance. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Electronic Journal of Information Systems Evaluation and International Journal of IT/Business Alignment and Governance, and conference proceedings.

Steven De Haes

Steven De Haes, PhD, is an associate professor of Information Systems Management at the University of Antwerp and Antwerp Management School. He is actively engaged in teaching and applied research in the domains of IT Governance & Management, IT Strategy & Alignment, IT Value & Performance Management, IT Assurance & Audit, and Information Risk & Security. His research has been published in international peer-reviewed journals, and he co-authored and/or edited several books. He is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal on IT/Business Alignment and Governance (IJITBAG) and acts as Academic Director of the IT Alignment & Governance (ITAG) Research Institute.

Wim Van Grembergen

Wim Van Grembergen, PhD, is a professor at the University of Antwerp (UA) and Antwerp Management School (AMS). He teaches information systems at master and executive levels and does research on IT governance, IT strategy, IT performance management, IT balanced scorecard, and IT assurance/audit. Professor Van Grembergen is Academic Director of the IT Alignment & Governance (ITAG) Research Institute and co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal on IT/Business Alignment and Governance (IJITBAG). He also chairs the mini-track on IT Governance at the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS).
