Togetherness and play under the same roof: children's perceptions about families

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the research study presented in this article is to look at the ways that a specific group of children think about their families and to develop contextualized methods for listening to children's perspectives about their families. It starts with a brief presentation of the theoretical and pedagogical context where the study has been developed. It follows a review of relevant research on children's perceptions about families. The presentation of the empirical study encompasses the methodology, data analysis and data interpretation. Final comments highlight some shared saliences in the thinking of the children of this group about family concepts and emphasise children's desire, expectations and pleasure on parent–child play situations.

RÉSUMÉ: Le but de la recherche présentée dans cet article est de savoir comment un groupe d'enfants particulier pense leurs familles et développent des méthodes contextualisées pour écouter les points de vues des enfants sur leurs familles. Nous commençons par une brève présentation du cadre théorique et pédagogique dans lequel l'étude se situe. Nous poursuivons avec une revue des travaux relatifs aux representations de leurs familles chez les enfants. La présentation de l'étude empirique comprend la méthodologie, l'analyse des données et leur interprétation. Les commentaries finaux mettent en lumière quelques caractéristiques communes de la représentation des enfants quant aux concepts liés à la famille et insistent sur le désir, les attentes et le plaisir des enfants relatifs aux situations ludiques parent‐enfant.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Zweck der Studie die in diesem Artikel vorgestellt wird ist es, die Sichtweisen einer spezifischen Gruppe von Kindern auf ihre Familien zu untersuchen und kontextspezifische Methoden der Wahrnehmung ihrer Perspektiven zu entwickeln. Der Beitrag beginnt mit einer kurzen Präsentation des theoretischen und pädagogischen Kontexts in dem die Studie entwickelt wurde. Ein Überblick über die relevante Forschung dazu wie Kinder Familien wahrnehmen schließt daran an. Die Präsentation der empirischen Studie umfasst die Methodologie, die Datenanalyse und –interpretation. Abschließende Kommentare stellen Gemeinsamkeiten im Denken der Kinder dieser Gruppe mit Blick auf Familienkonzepte heraus und betonen ihre Wünsche, Erwartungen und ihre Freude an Eltern‐Kind Spielsituationen.

RESUMEN: El propósito del estudio de investigación presentado en este artículo es examinar las formas de pensar de un grupo específico de niños acerca de sus familias y desarrollar metodologías contextualizadas para escuchar las perspectivas que los niños y niñas tienen acerca de sus familias. Se inicia con una breve presentación del marco teórico y pedagógico en el que se ha desarrollado el estudio. Sigue con una revisión de las investigaciones más relevantes sobre los niños y la percepción que tienen de sus familias. La presentación del estudio empírico abarca la metodología, el análisis de datos y la interpretación de los datos. Finalmente destacamos algunos de los comentarios compartidos en el pensamiento de los niños de este grupo acerca de los conceptos de familia y hacemos hincapié en el deseo de los niños, las expectativas y el placer de las situaciones de juego entre padres e hijos.
