Early childhood education and care as a space for social support in urban contexts of diversity

Abstract

The present study illustrates that social support in ECEC settings can take place across several socio-economical and cultural borders. The presence of children as brokers of relations plays a fundamental role in the creation of social networks, in the processes of parenting support and community building. ‘Free confrontations’ between parents and children can foster daily learning processes, despite/thanks to the contradictions and tensions that occur. This suggests that a meeting place can be a space where the experiment of democracy sporadically can emerge. In this experiment, parents, children and professionals are actors in the construction processes of parenting and community building. In so doing, parenting and living together, the pedagogical and the social, coincide.

RÉSUMÉ: Cette étude montre que le soutien social peut se réaliser dans les lieux de la petite enfance, au delà des barrières socio-économiques ou culturelles. La présence des enfants comme déclencheurs de relations joue un rôle important dans la création de réseaux sociaux, dans le processus de soutien parental et dans la cohésion sociale. La « confrontation libre » entre parents et enfants favorise les apprentissages quotidiens, malgré ou grâce aux contradictions qu'elle engendre. Cela mène à penser que le lieu d'accueil parent-enfants peut être un espace où l'expérience de la démocratie peut surgir. Dans cette expérience, parents, enfants et professionnels sont les acteurs de la construction de la parentalité et de la communauté. Ce faisant, parentalité et vivre-ensemble, éducatif et social, se rencontrent.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die vorliegende Studie stellt dar, dass soziale Unterstützung in Kindertageseinrichtungen sozio-ökonomische und kulturelle Grenzen überschreiten kann. Die Präsenz von Kindern als Vermittlern von Beziehungen spielt eine fundamentale Rolle für die Bildung von sozialen Netzwerken, für Prozesse der elterlichen Unterstützung und für die Gemeinschaftsbildung. « Offene Konfrontationen » zwischen Eltern und Kindern können alltägliche Lernprozesse fördern, trotz oder dank der damit verbundenen Widersprüche und Spannungen. Dies legt nahe, dass Kindertageseinrichtungen ein Raum sein können, in dem das Experiment der Demokratie zeitweilig « auftauchen » und gelingen kann. In diesem Experiment sind Eltern, Kinder und Fachkräfte Akteure von Erziehung und Gemeinschaftsbildung. Damit kommen Erziehung und gemeinsames Leben, die pädagogische und die soziale Seite, zusammen.

RESUMEN: El presente estudio muestra cómo puede desarrollarse el apoyo social en los lugares de atención a padres y niños pequeños, más allá de las barreras socioeconómicas o culturales. La resencia de los niños y niñas pequeños como elicitadores de relaciones juega un papel importante en la creación redes sociales, en el proceso de apoyo a los padres y en la creación de una comunidad. La ‘confrontación libre’ entre padres e hijos facilita los aprendizajes cotidianos, a pesar de o gracias a las contradicciones que se procovan. Esto sugiere que el lugar de reunión pueden constituir un espacio propicio para hacer surgir momentos en los que experimentar la democracia. En este experimento, padres, niños y profesionales son actores en losprocesos de construcción de vinculos paternos y de comunidad. Y es así como, desarrollando la paternidad/maternidad y viviendo juntos, lo pedagógico y lo social coinciden.
