Imaginary companions, theory of mind and emotion understanding in young children

ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of imaginary companions (ICs) has received little attention in developmental psychology, even though it can be observed in approximately 25% of preschool-aged children. Only a few studies have investigated the effect of ICs on children's theory of mind and emotion understanding, and the results are partial or inconsistent. This study used comprehensive measures to assess emotional understanding and theory of mind in children aged four to six with ICs (N = 24) and compared their performance to that of children without ICs (N = 24). Results showed that children with ICs, regardless of age and gender, have a better theory of mind and emotion understanding than children without ICs. The greatest impact of ICs was on girls' emotion understanding. The results are discussed in relation to gender differences.

RÉSUMÉ

Le phénomène des compagnons imaginaires (CI) a reçu peu d'attention dans la psychologie du développement, même s'il peut être observé chez environ 25% des enfants d'âge préscolaire. Seuls quelques travaux ont étudié l'effet des CI sur la théorie de l'esprit et la compréhension des émotions, chez les enfants, avec des résultats partiels ou incohérentes. Nous avons utilisé des mesures globales pour évaluer la compréhension des émotions et la théorie de l'esprit chez des enfants de 4 à 6 ans avec CI (N = 24) et nous avons comparé leur performance à celle des enfants sans CI (N = 24). Les résultats ont montré que les enfants avec CI, indépendamment de l'âge et du sexe, ont une meilleure théorie de l'esprit et une meilleure compréhension des émotions que les enfants sans CI. Le plus grand impact des CI concerne la compréhension des émotions chez les filles. Les résultats sont discutés en relation avec les différences de genre.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Das Phänomen der imaginären Gefährten (ICs) hat bisher wenig Aufmerksamkeit in der Entwicklungspsychologie erhalten, auch wenn es in etwa 25% der Vorschulkinder beobachtet werden kann. Nur wenige Studien haben die Wirkung von ICs aufTheorie des Geistes und Emotionsverständnis von Kindern untersucht, und die Ergebnisse sind fragmentarisch oder inkonsistent. In dieser Studie wurden umfassende Maßnahmen z emotionalem Verständnis und Theory of Mind bei Kindern im Alter von 4 bis 6 mit ICs (N = 24) untersucht und ihre Leistung im Vergleich zu der von Kindern ohne ICs (N = 24) bewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Kinder mit ICs, unabhängig von Alter und Geschlecht, eine bessere Theorie des Geistes und Emotionsverständnis zeigen als Kinder ohne ICs. Die größten Auswirkungen von ICs zeigten sich beim auf Emotionsverständnis von Mädchen. Die Ergebnisse werden in Bezug zu geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschieden diskutiert.

RESUMEN

El fenómeno de los amigos imaginarios (AI) ha recibido poca atención de la psicología del desarrollo, a pesar de que se observa en aproximadamente el 25% de los niños en edad preescolar. Sólo unos cuantos estudios han investigado los efectos de los AI en la teoría de la mente y la comprensión emocional de los niños, con resultados parciales o incoherentes. En este estudio se han utilizado medidas globales para evaluar la comprensión emocional y la teoría de la mente en niños de entre 4 y 6 años con AI (N = 24) y se compararon con niños sin AI (N = 24). Los resultados mostraron que los niños con AI, independientemente de la edad y del género, tienen una mejor teoría de la mente y una mejor comprensión emocional que los niños sin AI. El mayor impacto de los AI se encontró en la comprensión emocional de las niñas. Los resultados se discuten en relación con las diferencias de género.
