Notes

1 The Malealea Project is a well-established rural development scheme based around a cluster of villages high in the mountains of Lesotho. At its physical centre is a small tourist lodge, which has helped to generate some of the funding for the project.

2 Learning circles are a cooperative method associated with Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, which draws on personal stories and experiences to find creative solutions to community issues and concerns.

3 The joker is a character developed by Augusto Boal who can talk directly with the audience and also assume the role of other characters. The gossips also spoke to the audience and provided contrasting commentaries on the scenes, which had just been watched.
