Notes
1In Northrop Frye's definitive text, Fearful Symmetry: A Study of William Blake, he discusses Blake's use of this term in relationship to the prophetic books like Jerusalem. Frye writes, “In Blake the Firmament is the Mundane Shell, the indefinite circumference of the physical world through which the mind crashes on its winged ascent to reality.”
