3 These papers were developed from a panel on Tokyo/Olympics as practice-based research at the Performance Studies International conference in Copenhagen 2008 and edited by Peter Eckersall. Tokyo/Olympics received support from the Theatre Research Institute at Waseda University as an activity of their Global Centre of Excellence programme. Research for this project has been supported by the Global CoE programme and the Australian Research Council.

4 The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE) or Tokyo War Crimes Trails were convened from 1946–8 and were controversial because they raised the question of the Emperor's role in the war and of whether he should have been put before the Tribunal.

6 Although, such an approach might be possible in the traditional Japanese performing arts such as Nô and Kabuki where audiences often have specialist knowledge of performance conventions and repertoire.
