Developing the transactional perspective of occupation for communities: “How well are we doing together?”

ABSTRACT

Researchers in occupational science have begun to study occupation from a perspective beyond the individual. Previous occupation-based theory and literature, principally developed from the perspective of individual experience, has not offered sufficient theoretical foundation for this new scope of study. A need for theory and language that support further investigation in emerging scholarly and practice areas such as structural injustices, immigration, and community development is clear. The objective of this paper is to utilize philosophical perspectives of John Dewey to further develop the transactional perspective of occupation to address this need. A potential way forward for occupational scientists in studying these complex phenomena is uncovered by using Dewey’s understanding of associated living. A ground map for characterizing communal occupation is suggested. Concepts of private and public acts proposed by Dewey exemplify the manner in which occupational scientists can use real, identifiable consequences to understand occupation on an associated level. This development will complement theoretical and methodological work currently being undertaken by occupational scientists and benefit the development of new and often overlooked areas of study for the discipline. Ultimately, it will facilitate scholarship that can contribute to resolution of challenges faced by contemporary communities, allowing occupational scientists to study phenomena such as unifying occupation, stigmatizing occupation, or occupation that contributes to structural justice.

Los investigadores en ciencia ocupacional han empezado a estudiar la ocupación desde una perspectiva que va más allá del individuo. La teoría y literatura anteriores, basadas en la ocupación, y desarrolladas sobre todo a partir de la perspectiva de la experiencia individual, no han proporcionado una fundamentación teórica que resulte suficiente para este nuevo ámbito de estudio. En este sentido, resulta evidente la necesidad de crear una teoría y un lenguaje que coadyuven a la realización de investigaciones adicionales en áreas emergentes de la academia y la práctica en cuestiones que abarcan las injusticias estructurales, la inmigración y el desarrollo comunitario. El presente artículo propone el uso de las perspectivas filosóficas de John Dewey para seguir desarrollando la perspectiva transaccional de la ocupación y abordar dicha necesidad. La perspectiva de Dewey sobre la vida asociada constituye una posible alternativa que permitiría que los científicos de la ocupación estudien estos fenómenos complejos. Atendiendo a ello, el artículo brinda un mapeo para caracterizar la ocupación comunitaria. Los conceptos de actos privados y públicos, propuestos por Dewey, ejemplifican la manera en que los científicos ocupacionales pueden hacer uso de las consecuencias reales e identificables para comprender la ocupación en un nivel asociado. Este avance servirá para complementar las investigaciones teóricas y metodológicas que éstos realizan actualmente, a la vez que impulsará áreas de estudio innovadoras y a menudo subestimadas en este ámbito. En última instancia, el avance facilitará el trabajo académico, posibilitando que contribuya a resolver los desafíos enfrentados por comunidades contemporáneas, y que los científicos ocupacionales estudien fenómenos como la ocupación unificadora, la estigmatización de la ocupación o la ocupación que contribuye a la justicia estructural.
