Chinese whispers: my journey towards understanding and appreciating reflection

Pages 209-222 | Received 03 Apr 2011, Accepted 09 Dec 2011, Published online: 23 Feb 2012

Abstract

This paper is a thought-piece that offers a reflective account of my journey to learn more about reflective practice. Introducing reflective practice as a pedagogy deployed within post-experience education, it explores a way to translate this into a meaningful and positive encounter for a younger generation of students. Through an analysis of the purpose, process and assessment of reflective practice it seeks to enhance my personal practice. The thought-piece concludes with an illustration of my practice of integrating reflective practice into a first year course in a leading Chinese University.

1. ‘Mea Culpa’ is a Latin term that is used within Catholic rights to express one’s sinfulness and that the fault lies in the individual; literally ‘my mistake’ or ‘my own fault’.
