His master’s voice: Carl Rogers’ verbal response modes in therapy and demonstration sessions throughout his career. A quantitative analysis and some qualitative-clinical comments

ABSTRACT

We present an empirical analysis of session transcripts we have from the different phases of Carl Rogers’ career: Ohio 1940–41; Chicago 1945–1957; Wisconsin 1958–1960; La Jolla 1965–77 and Workshop demonstrations 1980–86. This is done with an adapted and further differentiated ‘Hill Counselor Verbal Response Modes Category System’. On the basis of quantitative data and some qualitative-clinical comments the following questions are focused on: What types of responses does Rogers make and to what extent? What strikes us as responses he almost never makes? Did he change over the years? What are the idiosyncratic characteristics of his reflections of feelings, of the way in which he confronts and gives feedback, of his personal task-related process comments, of his expressed relational here-and-now feelings, of his disclosures of personal life experiences …? To what degree and in what sense are his responses ‘experiential’ and process-differential …? As to the issue of non-directivity, we make a distinction between process-directivity, content-directivity and client-centeredness.

La voix de son maître: les modalités de réponse de Carl Rogers en thérapie et en sessions de démonstration tout au long de sa carrière. Une analyse quantitative et quelques commentaires cliniques qualitatifs

Nous présentons une analyse empirique de transcriptions de sessions issues de différentes périodes de la carrière de Carl Rogers (Ohio 1940–1941; Chicago 1945–1957; Wisconsin 1958–1960; La Jolla 1965–1977) ainsi que de démonstrations réalisées lors de workshops (1980–1986).

Cette analyse est faite au moyen d’une version adaptée et davantage différenciée du ‘Hill Counselor Verbal Response Modes Category System’. Sur base de données quantitatives et de quelques commentaires qualitatifs cliniques, les questions suivantes ont fait l’objet d’attention: Quels types de réponses Rogers fait-il et dans quelle mesure ? Qu’est-ce qui nous frappe quant aux réponses qu’il ne fait presque jamais ? A-t-il changé au fil des ans? Quelles sont les caractéristiques idiosyncratiques de ses reflets des sentiments, de sa manière de confronter et de donner du feed-back, de ses commentaires sur les processus personnels en lien avec la tâche, de ses sentiments exprimés dans l’ici et maintenant de la relation, de sa divulgation d’expériences de vie personnelle… ? Dans quelle mesure et en quel sens ses réponses sont-elles expérientielles ou processuelles…? En lien avec la problématique de la non-directivité, nous établissons une distinction entre directivité du processus, directivité de contenu et centration sur la personne.

Die Stimme des Meisters: Carl Rogers’ Reaktionsweisen in Therapie und in Demonstrationssitzungen während seiner Karriere. Eine quantitative Analyse und einige qualitativ-klinische Kommentare

Wir präsentieren eine empirische Analyse von Sitzungs-Transkripten, die wir aus den verschiedenen Phasen von Carl Rogers’ Karriere haben: Ohio 1940–41; Chicago 1945–1957; Wisconsin 1958–1960; La Jolla 1965–77 sowie Workshop-Demonstrationen zwischen 1980–86. Dazu verwenden wir ein adaptiertes und erweitertes ‘Hill Counselor Verbal Response Modes Category System.’ Auf der Basis von quantitativen Daten und einigen qualitativ-klinischen Kommentaren konzentrieren wir uns auf die folgenden Fragen: Welche Reaktionsweisen benutzt Rogers und in welchem Ausmaß? Welche Antworten fallen uns auf, die er fast niemals macht? Veränderte er sich über die Jahre hinweg? Was sind die idiosynkratischen Charakteristika seiner Formulierungen, mit denen er Gefühle spiegelt, seiner Art, wie er konfrontiert und Feedback gibt, von seinen persönlichen, aufgabenbezogenen Prozesskommentaren, von seinen ausgedrückten Hier-&-jetzt-Gefühlen zur Beziehung, von seinen Äußerungen zu seinen persönlichen Lebenserfahrungen …? Bis zu welchem Grad und in welcher Hinsicht sind seine Antworten ‘experienziell’ und prozess-differenziell …? Was das Thema Nicht-Direktivität betrifft, so machen wir eine Unterscheidung zwischen Prozess-Direktivität, Inhalts-Direktivität und Klientzentriertheit.

A voz do seu Mestre: modalidades de resposta de Carl Rogers em psicoterapia e em sessões de demonstração ao longo da sua carreira. Uma análise quantitativa e alguns comentários clínicos-qualitativos

Apresentamos uma análise empírica de transcrições de sessões que possuímos, de diferentes fases da carreira de Carl Rogers: Ohio 1940–41; Chicago 1945–1957; Wisconsin 1958–1960; La Jolla 1965–77 e de demonstrações feitas em Workshops 1980–86. Essa análise é feita recorrendo a uma versão adaptada e diferenciada do ‘Sistema de Categorização de Modalidades de Resposta Verbal’ de Hill. Tendo por base dados quantitativos e alguns comentários clínicos qualitativos, as questões que se seguem incidem sobre: Que tipos de respostas dá Carl Rogers e até que ponto? Que tipo de respostas verificamos que ele quase nunca dá? Ele mudou ao longo dos anos? Quais são as idiossincrasias das suas devoluções de sentimentos, da forma como ele confronta e dá feedback, dos seus comentários pessoais do processo relacionado com a tarefa, dos seus sentimentos relacionais expressos com referência ao aqui e agora, da sua revelação de vivências da sua vida pessoal. Até que ponto e em que sentido as suas respostas são ‘experienciais’ e diferenciadoras em relação ao processo? No que diz respeito ao tema da não-diretividade, nós distinguimos: diretividade relativa ao processo, diretividade relativa ao conteúdo e a dimensão ‘centrado no cliente’.

Presentamos un análisis empírico de las transcripciones de las sesiones que tenemos de las diferentes fases de la carrera de Carl Rogers: Ohio 1940–41; Chicago 1945–1957; Wisconsin 1958–1960; La Jolla 1965–77 y Demostraciones del taller 1980–86. Esto se hace con un ‘Sistema de Categoría de Modos de Respuesta Verbal del Consejero de Hill’, adaptado y más diferenciado. Sobre la base de datos cuantitativos y algunos comentarios clínicos cualitativos, las siguientes preguntas se centran en: ¿Qué tipo de respuestas hace Rogers y en qué medida? ¿Qué nos sorprende como respuestas que casi nunca hace? ¿Cambió con los años? ¿Cuáles son las características idiosincrásicas de sus reflejos de sentimientos, de la forma en que se enfrenta y da retroalimentación, de sus comentarios sobre el proceso relacionado con la tarea personal, de sus sentimientos expresados en relación aquí y ahora, de sus revelaciones de experiencias de la vida personal … ? ¿En qué grado y en qué sentido sus respuestas son ‘experienciales’ y de proceso diferencial .? En cuanto al tema de la no directividad, hacemos una distinción entre directividad del proceso, directividad del contenido y la centrada en el cliente.

Germain Lietaer, PhD is emeritus professor at Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium and connected to the Research Unit Clinical Psychology, where he taught client-centered/experiential psychotherapy and process research in psychotherapy on the master and postmaster level.
